Synopsis -
After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this one wore the expression of a child bursting to the secret: Mac Faraday was the heir to undreamed of fortunes, which were about to lead him to the birthplace of America's Queen of Mystery and a case that will unfold like one of her famous whodunits.
Soon after she moves to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive lakeside resort is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself "Pay Back" begins stalking her. When Katrina is found strangled all evidence points to her terrorist, who is nowhere to be found.
Three months later, the file on her murder is still open when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother's home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective.
With the help of his late mother's journal, this retired detective turns private investigator to pick up where the local police have left off to follow the clues to Katrina's killer.
Review -
It all begins here. It's Murder, My Son is the opening book in the author's fabulous Mac Faraday series. There are so many things I love about this story starting with the premise. You have a honest cop, whose crappy boss takes his credit and off-loads blame on him. A wife who just divorced him and took everything, except the debts. He is ready to declare bankruptcy. Then karma strikes and he discovers his birth mum was a famous writer who just passed and left him a fortune. He inherits a beautiful home, a world class resort, and a crazy, smart dog - Gnarly.
But once a cop, always a cop. Settled in his new home, he discovers there is an unsolved mystery to explore. Along with his half-brother who he just met for the first time, the beautiful Archie - his mother's editor who stays in a guest cottage on his property - and Gnarly, he gets embroiled in the enigma of a locked room murder from the past.
The plot has lots of great twists and turns to keep you turning the pages, but what also makes this book stand out is the author's ability to create amazing characters and bring them to life. Every single person you meet has depth. What they say and do is oh so purposeful. And Archie isn't a lesser side character, but a strong, intelligent and capable woman who can take care of herself. The addition of a large German shepherd who is as smart as the humans around him is the icing on the cake.
As the body count rises, and a few threatening shots are fired at Mac and Archie, the stakes rise. This is a great read.
